About Mindspawn

A DARK MUSIC ARTIST, PRODUCER AND MASTERING ENGINEER

Mindspawn is Gene Williams

I create music and sound related to the occult, cosmic horror, tarot, magick and music for film, television and roleplaying games (video game  RPG and TTRPG). Dark ambient, soundscapes and cinematic ambience are tools I use to create stories presented in sound tapestries.

If you seek to see through the illusion, journey on paths less traveled or delve into shadows, mayhap you will find something here to serve as the soundtrack to your explorations. Embrace the sound of oblivion.

Recorded and produced at Mindspawn/Cross Street Studio, Winchester, MA USA, January 2000. Analog instruments and digital recording equipment were utilized during the recording process. Alien and demonic sounds contributed by various aliens and demons.

Remastered at Mindspawn Mastering, Vallejo, CA USA, December 2021 by Gene Williams. In the remastering process some artifacts from the original recording process were noted. In finalizing the remasters I chose to leave everything as close to the original recordings as possible. This is very much a record of a moment in my artistic arc and I chose to keep that moment intact.

Original contents and sequence have been changed. Original contents included the tracks, The Seed, Of the Deep, and Labyrinth, which were released on the album, Null Infinite. Umbras and Offer the Abomination were recorded at the time of the original Darkness Weaves recordings and were originally omitted due to time limitation of the original release medium.

Thanks to all of you that have supported the Mindspawn project over these many many years.

Daemon - a being whose nature is intermediate between that of a god and that of a human being, a being from a thought experiment, a background process, one that has exceptional enthusiasm, drive, or effectiveness, an attendant power or spirit... This album explores all these concepts and relates a story, a journey, of one particular Daemon.

Each track is a meditation, a sound representation, on an aspect of the Daemon's existence. From The Gate, the journey beings, eventually ending at the Glisten Well, where final reflections posit, is this just math and vibrations moving through the air, or is it a thing not quite human, not quite a god... or just a thought experiment?

Whether a simple thought, program, or a spirit, it is there, waiting to be called upon.

These recordings were created largely, though not exclusively, on my modular synth. Most were started with a purpose, though their end form often resulted from explorations and experiments rather than deliberate process. I am ever an explorer of sound, and these drones, chirps, tones, washes, and shaped voltages that ended up as tracks on this album are some of the results, usually done in one go... semi-live shall we say.

A couple of the tracks or pieces evolved over a several days, the voltage never stopping, waiting for me to get some rest and come back for further exploration and refinement, for if I turned my beast of a modular synth off, the conjured sounds might be lost forever. Other tracks took hardly longer than their run time to create. Many many more were made and discarded... left decaying (or not) in ruinous heaps on my hard drives..

Whatever and however this album came to be, it is an expression from me to you, dear listener. My part is done, it is for you to complete this process. I hope you find it stimulating or enjoyable in your own way.... and always, thank you for taking the time to listen.

The files available here are the actual master files, available as 96kHz, 24 bit if you wish to download them at that quality. I highly recommend listening on high quality speakers or headphones, but then I would as I'm a bit of an audiophile (though more of a musicophile).

Interview with Casey Douglass

Casey Douglass, horror writer, reviewer, blogger, and general all-around good human, was kind enough to interview me for his blog.

From Casey: At the beginning of the year, I posted my review of Daemon, a dark ambient album from Mindspawn, a musician also known as Gene Williams. After reading the album description and some of Gene’s postings on his own website, I had more than a few questions that I was curious to get the answers to. Gene was kind enough to agree to an interview, the result of which you can see below. We talk about the role a persona plays in his creativity, the perils of working with tools that can be different each time you turn them on, and we get a glimpse of Gene’s general philosophy towards life. I hope that you find the interview as fascinating as I did. Read more on Casey's site here!

Mindspawn basks in the long night... A journey deep into the expansive cosmos of the soul, the mind, the essence. The Long Night is a themed collection of tracks that explores the mysteries of the dark, the long night, the Yin, and places as yet unimagined.

It comes every solar cycle, when the cacophony of autumn fades to a dull din and the gray eats at your psyche like a ravenous wolf, tearing small bits from what you think you are, the fading light disappearing through the spaces of its blood covered teeth. The call, the summons, the need to delve into the Yin, embrace the dark and be consumed by it. A time to listen to the dwellers of the deep, those things that wear darkness like a comforting scent. Their speech takes me awhile to adjust to, you have to hear it without listening, the words pouring like a song from a rusty pail swirling with possibility.

So I push aside the heavy door to the other place, the Underworld, Diyu, Náströnd, Naraka, the Outer darkness, Mictlan, Duat, Erebus, so many names across so much time....

Master tracks, 24bit 48KHz, files available as downloads (if downloaded as Flac / Wav / Aiff)

raubbau is delighted to present this transatlantic collaboration, sequel to the enormously well-received, yet regrettably rare first part of 2005. ‘erotomechaniks II’ is a dark ambient delicacy in seven parts, all very concise tracks with a defined structure, never getting lost in sound as such. the overall subject matter is perfectly specified by the title: the meeting of machinery with eroticism, of precision with yearning, of industrial with human sounds.

it was after his occult pop masterpiece ‘lashtal lace’ in 2014 that mikael aldén aka coph nia felt a certain creative drain, so obviously he turned away from the song structures and emotional range of said album and sought to return to what is his own roots as well as his shared history of dark ambient industrial with us-based artist mindspawn: gene williams is a recognized multifaceted visual and musical artist, as much a seasoned producer (active since around 1980) as he is obscure. the combination of these two creative minds makes for the special tension of their collaborative work. ‘erotomechaniks I’ was one of those albums that were received with rave reviews and enormous enthusiasm, but never found the wide audience it might have deserved due to the limited nature of its release. now, with a definite resurgence of interest in that particular style, it’s the perfect time for erotomechaniks II.

it’s from the very first hum of ‘hive mechanics’ that the listener feels a fragile comfort, an inescapable enchantment to the otherworld, before the antagonistic metal scrapes set in - and from there the trademark dualism of the album perseveres: the continued clash of the carnal with the constructed. erotomechaniks II is perfectly balanced, with the industrial sounds never pushing towards overt aggression, and the human sounds - like the subtle moans in ‘lust transformer’ - never diverting the abstract nature of the album. all of the tracks clock in around the seven-minute-mark and build an intriguing suspense; that, combined with the sublime sound design, makes erotomechaniks II a prime choice for the dark ambient massive.

Is there a parasitic mind living inside the host of humanity? From the primordial swamp to the hidden vault of knowledge, the journey is not linear, but punctuated with false starts, diversions, and delusions... all leading to one of many resolutions.... the wriggling in your mind. Which you are you....?
